Hawaii Kai Memories – “Walk Down Memory Lane”

The day I toppled down the stairs in Koko Head Elementary is my first recollection of my childhood, I was 7 years old. I was so embarrassed that I cried nearly an hour in spite of my teachers’ attempts at comforting me. If it wasn’t for my favorite chocolate ice-cream, I wouldn’t have quieted down.
I was born and raised in Hawaii Kai, the largest of several communities at the eastern end of the O’ahu Island. I remember having good childhood friends to play with from morning till late afternoon. We used to play outdoors and rode around the neighborhood on our bicycles. There were countless of games to occupy our day.
At the age of 15, I had to attend high school at Niu Valley Middle School; it is located outside Hawaii Kai. I felt very sad having to leave Koko Head Elementary to be amongst strangers. It wasn’t long when I made friends in my new school and at last found company. It has eased my loneliness and once again looked forward to leaving the house each morning.
At the end of that same year, I was chosen to play the role of Hippolyta in the play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and I became a celebrity overnight receiving lots of compliment for my outstanding performance.
My childhood memories are mainly just bits and pieces. My memories are the only things that stay constant. It’s a chapter of my book I can choose to visit anytime. I am now 24 years old and living on my own in a city far away from home, with a decent job and a loving partner. Somehow, I would claim that my life now is worth bragging, I am as proud as that kid that played Hippolyta. But I would admit I am feeling a bit of nostalgia, like gravity is pulling me home. I’ve been remembering my childhood memories with such burning accuracy. Perhaps I am missing my hometown, Hawaii Kai. It wasn’t just a town I was born and raised from. It was more of a honeycomb, and I am the bee.
